Courtyards and patios will often get more of their atmosphere from surrounding architecture than from plantings and other garden decor. Generally, you can create the atmosphere of a garden style, even the Mediterranean design style, with plants specific to that area or design style. However, with a courtyard and some patios, you have the building and its style to influence and accent all other elements within its boundaries.
